Spatial history and power

Last week, I stopped by Marronnier Park near Hyehwa Station. The sound of music heard from the park and the structure of the park naturally led me to a journey. The small and simple benches along the trees, gradual change of landscape as walking further, the children playing in the playground, the citizenschatting watching them. Above all, the park felt comfortable because it blended in the city not trying too hard to be a park.

For example, in places like Hongik University entrance the purpose of the space for busking is very clearly shown, so the purpose seemed to fight against each other. But Marronnier Park has been a place that had the emotional and cultural flow of the universities for decades, and still, after many years, has naturally embraced different age groups and new culture.

If we observe currently published books, we can see the flow of the society. I've been hearing a lot about loving who you are for a few years. It is the same for our cultural assets and space. Traditional values and new values always conflict or one side disappears creating new values and showing more various figures. There is no absolute answer to its value. However, seeing Marronnier Park coexist with citizens, I thought about the history and power of that space had. In the past, when we thought about tradition and modern culture we didn't really realize the value of tradition. But modern culture is an infinite variation based on tradition, and it is our responsibility to preserve and enrich the various cultural, spatial and artistic assets we have today.

지난주 혜화역 근처에 있는 마로니에 공원을 들리게 되었습니다. 공원 곳곳에서 들리는 음악소리, 그리고 도보에서부터 자연스럽게 이어지는 공원의 구조는 자연스럽게 발길을 이끌었습니다. 나무를 따라 아담하고 소박하게 조성된 벤치, 그리고 자연스럽게 길을 걸으며 달라지는 풍경, 놀이터에서 노는 아이들 그리고 이를 바라보며 담소를 나누는 시민들, 무엇보다 편안하다는 느낌이 들게 되었던 것은 애써 공원이려고 하지 않고 도심속에 은근슬쩍 자리한 느낌때문이었습니다.

가령 홍대입구 같은 장소에서는 버스킹을 해야겠다는 목적자체가 매우 뚜렷히 보여 서로 그 목적이 팽배히 싸우는것처럼 보였습니다. 하지만 마로니에 공원은 수십년동안 대학가의 감성과 문화의 흐름을 지녀오는 곳으로, 세월이 지난 지금도 다양한 연령대와 신생문화 또한 자연스럽게 받아들이는 모습이었습니다.

요즘 나오는 책들을 보면 사회의 흐름을 알 수 가 있습니다. 몇 년 전부터 있는그대로의 모습을 사랑하자는 이야기가 많이 들려오고 있습니다. 우리 곁에있는 문화자산이나 공간 또한 같습니다. 기존의 가치와 새로운 가치는 늘 대립하기도하고, 한쪽이 소멸되거나 새로운 가치로 탄생하는 듯 다양한 모습을 보이게 됩니다. 그 가치에 대한 절대적인 답은 없습니다. 다만, 마로니에 공원이 시민들과 공존하는 모습을 보며 그 공간이 지녀왔던 역사와 그 힘에 대한 생각을 했습니다. 과거에는 전통과 현대의 문화를 생각할 때 전통이 가진 가치를 잘 느끼지 못했습니다. 하지만 현대의 문화는 전통을 바탕으로한 무한한 변주이며, 현재 우리가 가진 다양한 문화, 공간, 예술 등의 다양한 자산을 지켜내고, 또한 현대와 어울러 풍요롭게 하는 것이 우리의 책임입니다.
