Straight & Curve

“ Only straight road is not the way.”

If the design was aimed at flowing curves like Art Nouveau style, Art Deco combines industrial production methods with a combination of straight and curved lines. It is characterized by a symmetry rather than asymmetry and a straight line rather than a curve based on the classical style close to neoclassicism. Art Deco, which appeared in the early 20th century, reflects the era of industrialization. Art deco's preferred streamlined form, using glass, metal, aluminum, chromium, nickel and iron that can be mass-produced, has become a factor that brings out the functionality.

We see countless competition and variations of lines and curves in our surroundings. Even though we have a tremendous amount of traffic that affects our feelings without knowing it, we are unaware of so many familiarities. Straight lines show the fastest and most intuitive solution. A line that is not bent or bent is a straight line. A straight line connects the shortest between two points. The straight road is convenient and close. If you go straight, you arrive quickly.

The straight line was born from its inherent limitations that could not bend, roll, sell, and walk slowly.
Straight physiology is good at sorting. Face each other and confront each other.
So, if you drink tea in a straight cup of tea with friends, each other is somewhat nervous.
This face is awkward. The seriousness formed by the paragraph is a bit uncomfortable. That's the straight seat.

Curves rather than straight lines seem to bring warmth and affection to our human beings. It is not possible to say which is right or which is wrong, but the important thing is that the curve still looks predominant as we are natural.

아르누보 스타일이 흐르는 듯한 곡선 디자인을 지향했다면, 아르데코는 공업적 생산방식을 접목시켜 직선과 곡선이 함께 조화를 이룬 스타일을 선보였다. 신고전주의에 가까운 고전적 양식을 바탕으로 비대칭보다는 대칭을, 곡선보다는 직선 형태를 추구한 것이 특징이다. 20세기 초 등장한 아르데코는 산업화가 시작된 시대를 반영한다. 대량생산 될 수 있는 유리나 금속, 알루미늄, 크롬, 니켈, 철 등을 사용해 아르데코가 선호하는 유선형의 형태가 기능성을 돋보이게 하는 요소로 자리했다.

우리의 주변 사물에서는 셀 수 없이 많은 직선과 곡선의 경쟁 그리고 변주를 목격한다. 우리도 모르는 데 감정에 영향을 줄 정도의 엄청난 왕래가 있으면서도 우리는 너무나 수많은 익숙함에 인식을 하지 못한다. 곧게 뻗은 선은 가장 빠르고 직관적인 해결력을 보여준다. 꺾이거나 굽은 데가 없는 선이 직선이다. 직선은 두 점사이를 가장 짧게 연결한다. 직선으로 통하는 길은 편리하고 가깝다. 직선으로 가면 빨리 도착한다.

직선은 애초부터 굽이 돌고, 감아 돌고, 한 눈 팔며 천천히 걸을 수 없는 태생적 한계를 타고 났다. 직선의 생리는 구분 짓는 일에 능숙하다.
서로가 정면으로 대면하고 대결한다. 그래서인가, 벗들과 직선의 차탁에서 차를 마시면 서로가 다소 긴장한다.
이러한 대면이 어색하다. 절로 형성되는 진지함이 조금은 불편하다. 직선의 찻자리가 그렇다.

직선은 인위적으로 창조한 선이다. 자연에 직선은 없다. 자연이나 살아있는 것들의 아름다움은 곡선에서 시작된다. 샘물처럼 솟아나는 정(情)도 곡선이다. 마음과 마음을 이어주는 건 부드러운 곡선에서 출발한다.

직선보다는 곡선이 우리 인간에게는 좀더 마음의 따뜻함과 정을 가져다 주는 것 같다. 어느 것이 옳고 어느 것이 바르다라고 할 수 없지만, 중요한 것은 우리가 자연인만큼 곡선은 여전히 우세해보인다.
