Jisueng lamp for DDP Collection, Seoul life 2019
「 Jiseung lamp that contains the wisdom of upcycling from our ancestors. 」
Jiseung is a kind of basket or tableware made by twisting long pieces of paper with the index and the middle finger. In the past, paper was scarce, so after they have written something on the paper, they gathered them in one place instead of throwing them away. When scholars grew old and were free, they spent their time twisting Hanji to make Jiseung. The wisdom of upcycling resources is contained in the paper.
Jiseung Lighting took its form from Jojokdeung. Jojokdeung is a lantern designed to shine on the footsteps and used to be carried by polices in the past to catch thieves. Jiseung lighting is made in white, black, and gray colors in large, medium, and small sizes. The gray version is made of used Hanji, which contains the wisdom of our ancestors.
